We Are Makers
We Are Makers Initiative works with local governments, corporations, universities, school districts and non-profits to cultivate diverse talent pipelines in tech entrepreneurship and emerging technologies like mixed reality, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and 3d printing. We emphasize creativity with rigor via play, self-initiated inquiry, progressive exposure and iterative hands-on activities that encourage enthusiasm about mathematics and science as useful tools for the creative process and societal impact. We have reached nearly 4000 diverse Utah youth in the last 2yrs, involved 200+ volunteers and have received two letters of recognition from Utah Governor Gary Herbert. Here is a 2min video summary of some of our work in the community. We Are Makers.
What is expected from volunteers?
Event will feature 4 main stations, for which we are looking for 35 volunteers:
1) Drones @ 4 kits we will need 8 volunteers – 15 minutes per turn can do 50 kids taking into account recharge time
2) Robotics @10kits we will need 10 robotics volunteers – with groups of 4-5 we can accommodate 40-50 kids.
3) 3d Printing we target 10 volunteers for 30 computers and 3-5 printers which take 15min to produce a simple object so can produce 48 – 80 objects for kids over 5 hours of event
4) Virtual Reality @ 4 kits we will need 8 volunteers to be at these stations. At 15 minutes per kid over 5 hours we treat about 80 kids
Not familiar with Robotics, Drones, 3D Printing and VR ??
That’s alright we have you covered!! There will be a training session for one hour before the event (details to come).
Quote:
“We Are Makers are committed to helping Utah youth realize their highest potential in STEM. We understand Utah as a special state at a special time for Science and Technology. Utah possesses one of the fastest growing state economies and benefits from a large youth population and low unemployment. Utah’s ability to take this success even further will require a healthy tech sector and a highly tech-literate populace. We know Tech itself is approaching an inflection point, with the coming decade’s developments in artificial intelligence, space technology, synthetic biology, quantum computing, mixed reality and additive manufacturing certain to revolutionize the way we all live, work and prosper. Moreover, these changes will not occur in a distant future; rather, they are right at our doorstep. We are investing today to identify, encourage and prepare a cross-section of youth, diverse in thought and background, to lead these fields on an equally diverse global stage, and capture a large share of the ensuing prosperity.”
